Back to Basics: What is Feng Shui?

Welcome to a brand new year and a chance to consider how we can all live more fulfilled lives. We aim to share with you different ways you can make small changes in your daily life to reach your goals. Keep in mind that there are many different schools and levels of Feng Shui but for this Feng Shui blog, we wanted to go back to the basics for our new readers, and refresh the memories of our returning ones.
Feng meaning wind, Shui meaning water, is an ancient art and science that was developed over 3000 years ago in China. It is a complex study and practice on how to harmonize the energies of any given space between specific environments, buildings and people. The Chinese believe nature is alive and filled with an energy, or force, that sustains all living and nonliving things once they are created; good Feng Shui is to mean an environment that can bring peace, health and good fortune to the inhabiting individual(s). It is an essential tool that is used when designing rooms, buildings or gravesites to abide by the invisible forces that chain the universe, earth and humanity together, which is known as Qi (pronounced Chee). The primary objective of Feng Shui is to find a natural harmonization of Qi.
Four important subjects of Feng Shui:

  1. Qi (pronounced chee): an invisible, yet movable, positive or negative life force or energy.
  2. Polarity (also known as ying and yang): consists of two parts: one creating an energy and one receiving the energy. Yang acting and yin
  3. Bagua: (also known as Feng Shui’s energy map): Bagua is one of the main tools to measure or analyze the energy in any given space. It allows you to understand the positive Feng Shui areas of your space in relation to specific areas of your life.
  4. Luo-Pan (also known as the Feng Shui compass): is a magnetic tool used to access deeper information about a site or building in order to analyze space for the best Feng Shui.

Remember, once the basic levels of Feng Shui are mastered, powerful results will start to be seen! Share with us what your goals are for this year in the comments section and may you have a prosperous and happy 2015!
