Mythbusting: Facts and Truths about Bedroom Feng Shui

When you woke up this morning, how did you feel? Happy, refreshed, stressed, in pain? Whatever state you woke up in may have something to do with the Feng Shui of your bedroom.
I discovered I could affect my waking state by the age of 10. I was an avid reader (still am) and going to bed early to read was favorite thing to do. I was in love with my bed and was always moving my bedroom furniture around. In the process of all that furniture rearranging, I discovered that the location and the direction I lay while sleeping made a difference.
I figured out that sleeping with my head towards the North never felt good and I figured out it was making a difference to how comfortable I felt, how well I could concentrate while reading and how well rested I felt in the morning. As a result, I would move my bed about every 3 months looking for the location where I felt the most refreshed.
The Feng Shui and energy of your bedroom (along with the front door and kitchen) is the last of the 3 most important factors of analyzing internal Feng Shui. Most of us spend more time sleeping than any one other activity. It is crucial that we are protected and supported with good Feng Shui while we sleep as we are energetically at our most vulnerable.
There’s a lot of misinformation surrounding bedrooms and romance Feng Shui. Some of the things you may have heard are:
Myth: Mirrors in the bedrooms will lead to affairs
Myth: A pair of Mandarin Ducks are a cure to find love
Myth: Four Poster beds are bad Feng Shui
Here’s the truth:

  • Everything in Feng Shui is related on one level to Yin and Yang.
  • Fundamentals for a good Feng Shui house is balance.
  • Yin and Yang should be balanced and complementary.

Front Doors and Kitchens are related to Yang Qi; beds and bedrooms are a Yin component of internal Feng Shui. We like bedrooms to be Yin. The deeper the sleep (Yin), the more refreshed and energized (Yang) we are when we wake. Bedrooms that are too Yang prevent good deep sleeps. Electronic equipment, TVs, computers, noise, too much light, too many doorways, mirrors are all examples of that correlate to Yang Qi that disturb the Yin Qi of a bedroom, even if the door is closed and the TV is off.
A properly located bedroom and bed will not only strengthen the health of the occupants, but also supports intimate and professional relationships and the increase of social status, respect and authority.
Regardless of Formula here are some basic rules and guidelines on how to set up the bedroom.

  • The bed should be stable and sturdy and as supported as possible. This is just common sense.
  • Place your bed against a solid wall. Walls are Yin and support the Yin function of sleeping.
  • Avoid positioning your bed under a window. Windows are Yang and create an overall imbalance in quality of sleep. Yes, sometimes there are formula exceptions to the rule, but then you must have a solid headboard and solid curtains for support to help offset the Yang Qi effect of the window.
  • A Waterbed is not a bed. The energy of water is not conducive for long term use to create support.
  • The actual construction material of your bed is not a major concern as long as the entire bed frame is sturdy. Having a wood or metal bed does not transfer the Qi.
  • You can choose any colour you like as long as it is pleasing to your eye.
  • A bed should not be on wheels. A wheeled bed belongs in a hospital or hotel.
  • The ideal shape for a bedroom is a square or rectangle.
  • Avoid slanted ceilings and beams above the bed. I see time and time again people with otherwise unexplained physical and emotional aches and pains suffer from sleeping in a room directly under a slanted ceiling or beam.
  • Avoid positioning the bed directly towards the bedroom door. This is because the Qi that comes into the room directly hits the bed. The movement of Qi is Yang and disturbs the Yin of the bed. A bathroom en suite door however does not have the same effect. As long as your bathroom is clean and tidy and you keep the door closed most of the time, no problem.
  • Keep your bedroom tidy and clean. Stagnant, blocked energy prevents Qi from flowing and supporting you.

Good Feng Shui is visible by effect. Look at your bedroom. What do you see?
Is the room stable, supporting, nurturing and protected?
Do you wake up feeling relaxed, clear and ready to start your day?
Do the relationships in your life support you?
These are all signs that your bedroom has good forms, and is in a good location, in essence good Feng Shui. This is all beginners Feng Shui. I hope what you have read enables you to explore Feng Shui with new insight and understanding and rewards you with a good nights sleep.
