My Personal Story

I am someone who always had a passionate curiosity about life, and especially wondered why life is the way it is. For more than 30 years I have researched philosophy, metaphysics, ancient studies, religions, and psychology –anything that addressed the question of what cosmic and earthly forces create and influence our lives and destiny“.

Since 1995, Asian Metaphysics -particularly Feng Shui- has captured my interest. It was fortunate that the first Feng Shui book I read was based on Classical and Traditional teachings. I learned that

It was fortunate that the first Feng Shui book I read was based on Classical and Traditional teachings. I learned that thousands of years ago, ancient Asian scholars observed how the forces of time and space are interconnected and that according to Feng Shui, our life and destiny are interdependent upon these forces. The Chinese traced their success and failure not only to their actions but also to the forces of the Earth. I learned the essential concept: that we are all part of a greater whole with the forces of Heaven and Earth interacting with Humanity in the middle. I discovered that what I had been describing as a feeling, the Chinese describe as Feng Shui. I was hooked –here lay the answers to many of my questions. I read that “correct”, or “good”, Feng Shui in our homes and businesses enhances our happiness and our lives. This knowledge excites me to this day.

I did not set out in life to be a Feng Shui practitioner. I studied Feng Shui initially as a way to understand and improve my own life. As my studies evolved, I learned that it is my path to bring Feng Shui knowledge and concepts to the western world. My life is now one of creating awareness of and improving surroundings; and in so doing, all of our lives are enhanced. With awareness comes choice, and with choice comes change.

“Together we are more. Helping you live a purposeful, meaningful life filled with opportunities, connection, insight, and light.”

One of my goals in life is to learn all the modalities associated with Feng Shui. This includes being able to read, understand and apply all the formulas embedded in the Chinese Compass, Qi Men Dun Jia, and Xuan Kong Da Gua.

The subject content is huge and I understand now completely what Confucius meant when he said on his death bed,” If I could live another 60 years I would devote my life to just the study of the I Ching and Metaphysics”. As you will see below, I was blessed in 2015 with the time and means to take my studies to another level.

2011

  • November 2011- I traveled to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia to take Feng Shui Modules 3 and 4.  This was a 10-day class. There were 50 people in the class from all over the world. ; I was one of 6 to graduate with distinction.   This was the most difficult class I have ever taken. The days were long. The first few days were theory; the last days were site visits and test questions that went on into the hours of the night in our groups of eight, reading and reviewing formulas and then relating this to our observations.  Joey promised me that I would learn to see Qi if I went to Malaysia to take this course, that he would teach me with his personal examples, and that he would show me how Feng Shui is really practiced at his level. Joey delivered on his promise.  It is difficult to quantify how much I learned. I had already been studying Feng Shui for years and yet I felt as if a brand new door and deeper meanings and applications had opened for me.  It was very exciting.
  • October – San Francisco Feng Shui 1 and 2 with Joey Yap, Mastery Academy.
This was my first in-person class with Joey Yap.

    • I Ching Divination Methods with Prof. Wang Yang in Chongqing
    • Visited and studied Feng Shui in several other cities of China with various local masters.
    • Was honored with the title of Master by two of my masters (note there is no governing body worldwide that regulates the use of Master. In general the term Master is used to distinguish a proficiency in the concepts of classical Feng Shui).

2005 – 2013

  • Read another 300 books on various Feng Shui topics (most were not that great, my search continued for Classical Feng Shui Books).

2000 – 2013

  • Studied with and continue to study with Prof. Lily Chung.

When I was in Italy I was in a class of 80 international students. I asked a few students who would study within North America? – the answer was Lily Chung.   Lily’s specialty is BaZi and I Ching.  I immediately went to San Francisco for a week of one on one.   Since then I have numerous times brought Lily to Vancouver for workshops, promoted her books, and returned to San Francisco for more classes.  She has mentored and guided me for many years.  Lily Chung holds a Ph.D. in Urban Geography and is the author of several BaZi and I Ching books.  We are now working together on a book to be released in 2014.
2005

  • Studied with Master Joseph Yu in Melbourne Australia Feng Shui Master Course in Water Placement Methods and advanced Business Feng Shui (Sun and Moon Activation Formulas).

1999 – 2000

  • Traveled to San Francisco, New York, Italy, and Holland, 6 module Feng Shui Practitioner Certification Course with Roger Green and Prof. Chang.   This course covered Form School; Eight Mansions – BaZhai and Ming Gua; Xuan Kong  – Flying Stars; and introduction to Chinese Astrology – BaZi.

1999

  • Studied Eight Mansions Compass school Feng Shui and Interior Design with Victoria-based Interior Design Firm

1995 – 1998

  • Studied with the teacher in Victoria BC Black Hat Feng Shui
  • Read 300 books on Feng Shui (Currently, I have read approximately 700 books on Feng Shui. I believe I have read just about all the books that have ever been published in English that relate to the subject, I suppose you can tell I love reading).
  • Two online courses introduced me to the Compass School Methods of Eight Mansions

I decided to further my studies with Joey Yap in 2012 by taking his full Chinese Astrology course BaZi modules 1-5. I wanted to learn more. I wanted to understand the different viewpoints of my various teachers and decide for myself what interpretations to take. Joey separates Chinese Astrology BaZi from Feng Shui. The fields of Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology are huge with several classics in each field. The original textbooks are written in Mandarin and prose, and as a result, each master has their own focus and particular area that they specialize in. There is much discussion and debate at elite levels of practice on the use of the Chinese calendar. The Chinese calendar is based on the Lunar and Solar cycles. Lily Chung uses the Lunar Calendar, Joey Yap uses the solar calendar. I wanted to learn the validity of each system. There were 80 students in attendance at Modules 3 and 4, with at least 30 from various corners of the world; there were 35 of us who took the exam. Again, a very challenging and long 10 days, much of the teaching was directed to application in business. I learned deeper levels of how to use the effects and energy of time to our advantage for business and personal use. I learned in-depth levels of character and personality analysis based on the birth chart. I learned what people are best skilled at based on their charts, (research, networking, branding, performing, writing, etc.) I learned how to see what are obvious versus hidden skills waiting to be developed. I learned a pictorial method of looking at the birth chart and time; personally, I love this method.

Everything in Asian Metaphysics is expressed in Yin and Yang and Five Element Theory.  There are 10 signs that influence your life, Yin and Yang Wood, Yin and Yang Fire, Yin and Yang Earth, Yin and Yang Metal, and Yin and Yang Water.  The pictorial method draws a picture of your life at any given time. Let’s say your chart is ruled by Yang Fire – the Sun; are you born at night or during the day – can anyone see you?   If you are Yang Metal, in order to become a sword you need fire to be forged. Is there fire in the chart?  Are you stubborn – Yang Wood a tree, or Yang Earth a mountain, or Yang Metal a sword? What is the temperature of your chart and hence life, is it cold or hot? What can you do to change these effects? Awareness is always the first step and Feng Shui and the right action is the remedy.  I love using this method when I talk to people about their charts and personalities and the effects of time, by determining what elements are needed to create harmony in your life I introduce them into your living and workspace with Feng Shui applications.

And finally, the best thing I took away from my classes with Joey Yap is the world-class connections and friendships I have made.

Other Education and Personal Experience

  • 2000 – Italy – 5 day Face Reading Course. In addition, I have over the year read approx. 30 books on Face Reading.
  • 1995 – 1998.  Western Astrology with the London School of Astrology – Three-year in-depth correspondence course.  Prior to this course, I read approx. 200 books on Western Astrology.   I am an adept Western Astrologer.
  • 1993 – 2002 – I worked in Victoria BC managing three buildings that housed Hard to House adults with Mental, Drug, and Alcohol Issues. We had 3 buildings with 70 units of housing. I worked to create private-public partnerships with various levels of government to create supported housing.  My main focus was on one particular building (The Apple) where we housed primarily hard-to-house schizophrenics with more than one diagnosis. These were people who were literally fallen in the cracks as multiple issues would prevent them from getting help, support, and better housing.  During this time, I sat on various boards at all levels of the private and public sector to bring awareness and support to those with mental illness and drug and alcohol issues.  I am proud to have been a part of a group that lobbied to have the first BC legislation passed that allowed restaurants, caterers, and grocery stores to donate food without fear of liability, (The Food Donor Encouragement Act – 1997).
  • In addition, I spent many years reading and learning in my spare time while I was married and not married and raising three children.  When my children were young I volunteered at the local little league, eventually spending three years as League President. I have three grown children, two boys, and a girl. My oldest son Nathan is an incredible artist who uses his talents as a world-class Tattoo Artist. My son Graham is a manager in the transportation business.  My daughter Morgan is a civil engineer working currently on a hydro dam project.
  • I was born and raised in Vancouver, lived in the late ’70s and early 80’s in Saskatoon, and Regina, moved to Victoria BC 1983 – to 2004. I lived in Australia in 2004 and 2005, in a wonderful small town called Warrnambool in Victoria at the end of the Great Ocean Rd.  Since 2006 home is Vancouver B.C.
