Month of the Wood Goat | Yi Wei (乙未)

Dear students, clients and friends,

On July 7th we enter the month of the Wood Goat, the final month of the Fire season and beginning of nature’s gradual movement toward Yin.

The image of this month is extraordinary.

Imagine a single wildflower blooming in the middle of a vast desert. By every logical measure, it shouldn’t survive. Yet somehow it does. It not only survives—it flourishes.

The Wood Goat reminds us that life is always seeking life. Even in the harshest conditions, nature continues reaching toward the light. Hope is never absent.

The image of Yi Wei (Wood Goat) is that of a delicate flower rooted in dry earth. It symbolizes hope against all odds—the quiet resilience that refuses to give up, even when circumstances appear impossible.

Perhaps this is the message you need right now.

The desert is one of the richest spiritual symbols found across many traditions. It has never simply represented hardship or barrenness. Instead, it is understood as a sacred place where everything unnecessary falls away and only what is essential remains.

Across history, awakening often begins in an inner desert.

Moses encountered the burning bush in the wilderness. Jesus spent forty days in the desert before beginning his ministry.

In Ancient Egypt, the surrounding desert represented transformation, hidden wisdom, and the journey beyond the visible world.

Again and again, the desert becomes the place where people remember who they truly are.

Many traditions even suggest that the desert holds memory—not because the sand literally records the past, but because silence allows consciousness to remember what busyness makes us forget.

Beneath all the striving… beneath all the fear… beneath all the uncertainty… something within us has always remembered. Many people today feel as though they are walking through their own inner desert.

Perhaps it is uncertainty.

A health challenge. Changes within relationships. Financial concerns. Questions about purpose. Or simply the feeling that life is asking something different of us than it once did.

Perhaps you’ve experienced a season like this yourself. A time when nothing seemed to be happening…yet something within you was quietly changing.

The Wood Goat gently reminds us that difficult seasons are not evidence that life has abandoned us.

Sometimes they are the very conditions that allow our deepest roots to grow.

The desert is not proof that life has disappeared. It is the place where hope becomes unmistakable.

Life has never stopped living. Even when nothing appears to be happening. Even when we cannot yet see the way forward.

The I Ching hexagram associated with the Wood Goat is Hexagram 48 — The Well.

If the Wood Goat represents hope emerging from unlikely places, the Well reminds us where that hope comes from.

A well is far more than a source of water.

Throughout history, it has been the heart of a community—the place where people gathered, shared wisdom, supported one another and sustained life itself.

A well belongs to everyone.

It must be cared for, protected and kept clear so that it can continue serving all who come to it.

In many ways, we are each responsible for tending our own inner well.

Our thoughts.

Our beliefs.

Our relationships.

Our spiritual practices.

The quality of our lives depends not only on the circumstances around us, but on the condition of the well within us.

The deeper teaching of Hexagram 48 is that transformation doesn’t happen in isolation.

We nourish one another.

We learn from one another.

We become stronger together than we ever could alone.

Perhaps that is why community matters so much.

  • Every act of kindness.
  • Every conversation.
  • Every moment of encouragement.
  • Every lesson shared.

Each becomes another bucket drawing living water from the well.

This month invites us to:

  • Trust that growth is often happening beneath the surface before it becomes visible.
  • Tend your inner well through practices that nourish your body, mind and spirit.
  • Release what no longer supports your highest good, creating space for new possibilities to emerge.
  • Notice where hope quietly continues to appear, even in unexpected places.
  • Celebrate one another’s victories and remember that none of us walks this journey alone.

Notice where your energy is being drawn. Competition often reveals where opportunity exists, but don’t chase what everyone else is chasing. Instead, stay rooted in your own values and look for where you can offer something unique. When you stop comparing yourself to others, your own strengths become much easier to recognize and develop.   The opportunity is there to align with others, not compete for mutual supportive growth.

Yi (乙) Wood
Growth comes through connection. This month favours collaboration over competition. Ask yourself, “How can I strengthen the whole?” When everyone benefits, your own success becomes more sustainable. The greatest opportunities may come through building relationships and creating value that supports others as well as yourself.

Bing (丙) Fire
Words, ideas and decisions have lasting consequences. Speak with clarity and integrity, trusting that once you’ve shared your wisdom, others must choose their own path. Your responsibility is to communicate—not to convince. Plant the seed, then allow life to unfold in its own time. The potential is a month where your ideas are met with interest and welcomed, it’s a month of potential where your ideas turn into lasting positive change, but first you need to speak up. You never know what can happen when you take conscious measured action.

Insights may arrive suddenly as scattered pieces begin to come together. Trust your vision, but don’t rush. Give your ideas time to mature before taking action, allowing them to unfold with wisdom rather than excitement. Not everyone will immediately see what you see, so patience will serve you well. The challenge is not resourcing what you need to be successful, the challenge is taking what you have and whom you  know already and making it work for you.   The opportunity is for insight, connections and opportunities to align with your vision.  Beware and be ready, whatever you do, it will spread quickly.

Wu () Earth
Success isn’t about competing with everyone else—it’s about choosing the right game to play. Stay grounded in your values while remaining flexible enough to adapt as circumstances change. Focus on building lasting foundations rather than chasing short-term wins, and let consistency become your greatest strength.  The opportunity is to evolve without compromising your values and foundations.   Don’t get distracted by other peoples needs, make other peoples needs work for you instead.

Ji () Earth
This is a month to simplify. Release commitments, habits, or relationships that have fulfilled their purpose. Creating space isn’t selfish—it allows new opportunities and healthier connections to emerge. By honouring your own needs, you’ll have far more energy to give where it truly matters.  The question to address is what needs to be eliminated for you to meet your goals and desires?    No two things can occupy the same space at the same time. Make room for what matters.

Geng () Metal Change often asks us to learn new ways of doing things. Rather than resisting what is evolving, look for how you can adapt while staying true to what matters most. Sustainable progress comes through balance. Every adjustment you make now has the potential to create greater freedom and efficiency in the months ahead. This month favours disciplined focus action particularly in the areas of your life involving money.  Look for where you can be more efficient and where change is needed and take action accordingly

Xin (辛) Metal
Explore new ideas, skills, or perspectives with curiosity, but don’t lose sight of your bigger vision. Every experience has something valuable to teach. A detour may lead to an unexpected breakthrough. What seems like a distraction today may become an important piece of the puzzle tomorrow. People are there to support you, opportunities are there to be found, look outside the box is the key.

Ren (壬) Water
Beware of increased reactivity this coming month, be mindful that not every problem needs to be addressed. Focus your energy on what you can influence and let go of what you cannot control. Adaptability, not resistance, will carry you through this month. By conserving your energy and trusting the timing of life, you’ll be better prepared for the opportunities that follow.   Haste makes waste.  There will be a tendency to cut corners, to rebel. The opportunity though is with conscious mindfulness to create new ways of responding that create long lasting positive change.

It’s a month that favours out with the old and in with the new. If you’re seeking greater growth, your old systems may no longer be enough. This is a time to upgrade the way you work, think, or organize your life. Small improvements now create lasting results later. Rather than working harder, ask yourself how you can work with greater clarity, simplicity and intention.  The challenge is improvement requires consistent focused change, this month supports you to start the steps of creating lasting positive change.

The Wood Goat teaches us that resilience is not force.

It is quiet perseverance.

It is trusting life even when we cannot yet see the outcome.

The flower doesn’t bloom because conditions are perfect.

It blooms because blooming is its nature.

Perhaps yours is too.

As we move through this month, may we remember that hope is not something we manufacture.

It is something we remember.

Life has never stopped living. And neither have we.

May this month bring you quiet confidence, renewed trust, and the courage to keep growing—one small step at a time.

With you in this journey called life…

Love and Light, Marlyna
