You want good Feng Shui… but you won’t move your bed?
| “We often believe we need to change ourselves. Sometimes what needs to change first is the space that holds us.” — Marlyna Los Dear students, clients and friends, “I want better Feng Shui.” I hear those words all the time. Really, what my clients are saying is, “I want a better life.” They want better health. More restful sleep. Happier relationships. Greater prosperity. More energy. More opportunities. Then I suggest moving their bed. Or, heaven forbid, moving into a different bedroom. Suddenly, there are reasons why it can’t be done. “It’s always been there.” “It won’t fit.” “I need my own bathroom.” “My partner doesn’t want to.” After more than three decades of consulting and teaching Classical Feng Shui, I’ve learned that the resistance is rarely about the furniture. It’s about our willingness to embrace change. If I’m honest, many of us are looking for the magic pill. We want life to change without having to change anything ourselves. Yet our homes tell a different story. Your Home Reflects Your Life One of the greatest lessons Feng Shui has taught me is that the homes we choose are not random. They tell our story. They reflect our habits, priorities, beliefs, and often our subconscious patterns we don’t even realize we’re carrying. If we carry a deep belief that life is hard, that we’re unsupported, or that we have to struggle, those beliefs often show up in our homes—through what we tolerate, what we avoid, and even where we choose to sleep. The home doesn’t create those patterns but it certainly reveals them. The ancient wisdom teaches, “As within, so without.” When we intentionally change our environment, something within us often begins to shift as well. That’s why Feng Shui is so much more than decorating and trinkets. It’s about creating an environment that supports the life you want to live instead of unconsciously reinforcing the life you’ve always experienced. We Spend One-Third of Our Lives in Bed Think about that for a moment. If you sleep eight hours each night, you spend roughly one-third of your life in your bedroom. That is where your body repairs itself. Your brain processes the events of the day. Your immune system restores. Your emotions settle. Your subconscious mind is most active. If there is one room in your home that deserves careful attention, it is your bedroom. Yet it is often the room people are least willing to change. Good Bedroom Feng Shui Begins with Forms One of the biggest misconceptions about Feng Shui is that it begins with a compass. It doesn’t. It begins with what we call Forms—the physical environment around you. Forms are always considered first because they create the foundation for good Feng Shui. If the Forms are poor, no formula can completely overcome them. It’s like building a house. You don’t choose the paint colour before you’ve poured the foundation. In Feng Shui, Forms are the foundation. Some of the most important bedroom principles include: A stable bed with a solid headboard against a solid wall. Placing the bed in the Command Position, where you can see the bedroom door without being directly in line with it. Having space on both sides of the bed whenever possible. Choosing a regular-shaped bedroom rather than an awkward or highly irregular space. Avoiding sloping ceilings or heavy beams above the bed. Avoiding large mirrors, especially those reflecting the bed, as they increase Yang activity in a room meant for rest. Keeping the bedroom dark, quiet, uncluttered, and supportive of sleep. These principles aren’t arbitrary rules. Every one of them helps create a sense of safety, stability, and support—qualities your nervous system recognizes even if you aren’t consciously aware of them. They also help create a more Yin environment. Yin Qi is quiet, restorative, and nourishing. It supports deep sleep, healing, and renewal. When your bedroom has the right balance of Yin energy, you are far more likely to wake refreshed, restored, and ready to engage with the day. But Good Feng Shui Doesn’t Stop There This is where many people stop. They read a few articles online, move their bed into the Command Position, remove a mirror facing the bed, and believe they’ve “done Feng Shui.” And then they wonder why their life hasn’t changed. They’ve improved the Forms—but that’s only the first layer. Professional Classical Feng Shui goes much deeper. Once the Forms are supporting you, we go into deeper analysis, looking at the energetic blueprint of both the person and the home. Why Every Bedroom Is Different This is where systems such as Eight Mansions and Flying Stars become invaluable. Two bedrooms can have the same furniture. The same layout. The same colours. The same décor. Yet one room consistently supports deep sleep, vibrant health, harmonious relationships, and clear thinking, while the other leaves its occupants feeling exhausted, restless, or constantly challenged. Why? Because Classical Feng Shui doesn’t stop with what we can see. Eight Mansions helps determine which areas of a home are naturally more supportive for each individual based on their personal energy pattern. Flying Stars maps the changing qualities of Qi throughout the home according to its construction period and compass orientation. Some sectors naturally support health, relationships, learning, or prosperity, while others may contribute to disturbed sleep, conflict, illness, or unnecessary stress if left untreated. This is why professional Feng Shui is never about applying the same advice to every home. Every home is unique. Every person is unique. Every solution should be unique. The Bed Often Reveals Our Resistance Clients often ask me, “Can you just tell me where my bed should go?” Sometimes the answer is obvious. Sometimes there are several possibilities. And sometimes the best physical location isn’t the best energetic location. That’s why professional Feng Shui is never just about moving furniture. It’s about understanding the relationship between the people, the property, and the energy of both. Over the years, I’ve noticed something else. The resistance to moving the bed is rarely about the bed. It’s about letting go of “the way we’ve always done it.” Yet the very people who resist changing their environment are often hoping for significant changes in their lives. Sometimes we want transformation without changing anything. Feng Shui gently reminds us that our environment is always part of the equation. Where Should You Begin?
